3. Jubilee for the Bound and Blind

Luke 4:18‑19

⁵ Is this the kind of fast I have chosen, only a day for a man to humble himself? Is it only for bowing one’s head like a reed and for lying on sackcloth and ashes? Is that what you call a fast, a day acceptable to the LORD? ⁶ “Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke? ⁷ Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter-- when you see the naked, to clothe him, and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?”                                                                    Isaiah 58:5-7

Christ’s Jubilee Is...
I.        ­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­ Freedom for the Prisoner – He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners (4:18)

Jesus replied, “I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave to sin.”                                                                                                          John 8:34

³¹ To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. ³² Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” ³³ They answered him, “We are Abraham’s descendants and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?”                                        John 8:31‑33

But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called Today, so that none of you may be hardened by sin's deceitfulness.                                                           Hebrews 3:13

“If only we had died by the Lord’s hand in Egypt! There we sat around pots of meat and ate all the food we wanted, but you have brought us out into this desert to starve this entire assembly to death.”                                                                                Exodus 16:3

We remember the fish we ate in Egypt at no cost‑‑also the cucumbers, melons, leeks, onions and garlic.                                                                                   Numbers11:5

II.        Sight for the Blind – He has sent me to preach … recovery of sight for the blind. (4:18)

For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves.

The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.              II Corinthians 4:4

But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.                                                                                                                   I Peter 2:9

⁶ There came a man who was sent from God; his name was John. ⁷ He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all men might believe. ⁸ He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light.                                                                                                                   John 1:6-8

 III.        Release the Oppressed – He has sent me to release the oppressed  (4:18)

For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ.
